The approvals to be streamlined by the proposed Bill 108 (Schedule 11) seem directed at enabling developers. First of all, why an omnibus bill? Secondly, unfettered growth in the GTA should not be promoted to benefit the few at the expense of the collective, especially when principles of conserve and protect are compromised. It is stated that the Ontario Heritage Act (2005) has not been updated in 15 years. What specifically are the problems that would require updating? Spell them out and don't obfuscate by saying protection will be enhanced when in fact it is the obstruction and appeal process and onerous new research sharing requirements which are at the heart of the proposed changes. The nightmare of the OMB and its non impartiality is only recently behind us and now this thinly veiled assault on progressive heritage protection. Well managed heritage grows the economy in a much more harmonious way than rapacious development. The cynical ideology behind the new proposals is not hidden from us let the kids in the short pants who propose this be assured.
