I strongly support extending the moratorium on on new water bottling permits. Water is a precious resource that is vital to the survival of us all. As the climate changes and we enter into a time of precarity and uncertainly in the natural world, it is crucial that we approach out natural resource management with careful planning and thoughtfulness.
Water is a public commons. It is not a commodity to be sold or given away to corporations who then profit from selling it back to us. The current practice of charging only $500 dollars per million liters of water extracted is outrageous. We should be extremely limiting or banning the extraction of water for private bottling all together. If we did allow that extraction of water for bottling, we should be charging exponentially more for it to allow us to invest in protecting and revitalizing ecosystems and water resources.
