Affordable housing needs to consider poor people as well as those able to afford market rates. It also needs to consider the needs of renters, whether they are renting temporarily or will never own real estate.

Affordable housing can mean so many things. What is affordable to one, is not to another. Home ownership does not need to be the norm. It is only since World War II that home ownership of single detached houses for 1 family was advertised as the goal instead of just an option.

I fully support getting more middle housing. Letting people of different income levels live in the same area is important for ensuring equality. Otherwise, people get isolated into their own socioeconomic bubble, including children who attend schools based on their neighbourhood.

We are looking at supporting community-led initiatives to develop housing cooperatives, and we are exploring land trusts as a model to ensure long-term stability and affordability in the face of market fluctuations.
The Town of Milton supports finding ways to support “gentle density” and increase “missing middle” housing, including encouraging multigenerational housing solutions in existing neighbourhoods. However, the importance of sympathetic development in our mature neighbourhoods must be reinforced.
