I am glad to see the removal of OPAC. It's function was to put a social aspect to a scientific matter. Unfortunately that committee lead to an undue hardship to Ontario farmers as they were not allowed access to active ingredients that farmers in other jurisdictions were allowed to use.

I support the removal of the Ontario Pesticide Advisory Committee (OPAC) from the Ontario Pesticide Act. The federal government, through the Pest Management Regulatory Agency, conducts a thorough, scientific review and risk assessments for pesticide registrations.

It is good to see these changes. This will definitely speed the process up but as a farmer that has taken the Ontario pesticide course since they started I have concerns. Most farmers and instructors have agreed with me that the course basics since it began have not changed.

Ammendments to the Pesticide Act
I am so pleased that the IMP public meeting will no longer be required. The cost to advertise and host a meeting that was never attended is a waste of time and resourses.

This is understandably concerning that you want to remove the “time lag” for businesses to start using and selling pesticides without waiting for proper classification.
You are proposing to remove a critical step in protecting people from toxins for cosmetic purposes.

Would the proposed legislation and associated regulatory changes in The Pesticide Act have unexpected negative outcomes for the environment, in particular on the health and numbers of Ontario's pollinator bee population? That is my main concern.
I would hope in these amendments there is NO loosening of the current rules on pesticide use. We can't afford to take a step backward! Our environment has suffered far more than we should ever have allowed.
Aligning with the federal government pesticide categories is an acceptable move.
This is not congruent with the move to eliminate OPAC. No where in the mandate for OPAC is the word “classification “ mentioned.

a) I absolutely support the retention of the Ontario Pesticide Advisory Committee. It is essential to have an arm's length group assessing and classifying pesticides. Cosmetic pesticides in particular must be carefully controlled.

I do believe in continuing education, however I have a problem with re writing the exam every 5 years. If someone has had limited time to study because of family or personal reasons and they fail the exam then they are potentially out of a job and sometimes they are the only income for the family.
