I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed Bill 5, particularly the amendments that would exempt the Ontario Place redevelopment project from Part II of the Environmental Bill of Rights, 1993.
These changes would remove essential requirements for public notice and consultation for provincial permits and approvals tied to the Ontario Place project, including those not located directly on the site. This exemption undermines democratic transparency and public accountability, especially on issues that have lasting environmental and community impacts.
Ontario’s Environmental Bill of Rights exists to ensure that the public has a voice in decisions that affect our shared environment. Granting sweeping exemptions to projects of this scale sets a dangerous precedent—one that diminishes public trust and bypasses vital scrutiny meant to protect both people and the planet.
I urge you to reject these amendments and uphold Ontarians’ right to be informed and consulted on major environmental decisions. Ontario Place’s future should be shaped through open dialogue, not backroom deals.
