I strongly oppose Bill 5, which poses significant risks to environmental protection and public oversight in Ontario.
This bill undermines vital environmental safeguards by weakening the Environmental Bill of Rights and limiting the public’s ability to comment on projects that impact our communities and ecosystems. By reducing transparency and fast-tracking development approvals, Bill 5 prioritizes short-term economic interests over long-term environmental sustainability and public health.
Ontario’s natural heritage – including wetlands, forests, and clean water sources – needs stronger, not weaker, protection in the face of climate change and biodiversity loss. Bill 5 risks irreversible damage to these resources and sidelines local voices in critical land-use decisions.
I urge the government to withdraw Bill 5 and engage in meaningful consultation with the public, Indigenous communities, scientists, and environmental organizations. Our environmental laws should be strengthened to reflect the urgent challenges of our time, not rolled back.
