The replacement of all carbon emitting transportation is both urgent and expensive.
It is important to harness all customary incentives for replacing capital assets, including accelerated depreciation allowances and write offs of gasoline powered vehicles. Financing and grants will also be important.
It is important as well to restrict the manufacture and sale of gas and diesel engines, as many countries are considering and others have achieved. It is important to announce a date for this well in advance, as vehicles are expensive and are part of a very long term budget for individuals, families and companies. We can recognize the certainty of such a transition: the question is how soon. Announcing an end date now will allow long term planning.
Using infrastructure funds to purchase EV buses and other fleet vehicles is essential. It will allow real time understanding of the issues and allow quicker resolution.
The issue of charging needs to be resolved. The north has a solution well ahead of the south of the province: plug ins. Wherever we can park a car, we should be able to plug in a car. People with driveways should be allowed to install chargers and rent out their use. Parking lots should provide and charge for refueling.
