Parry Sound Area Active Transportation (PSAAT) is pleased to learn the province is establishing a province-wide network of connected cycling routes as part of its strategy to encourage cycling as a viable mode of transportation. We agree this initiative is an important part of the transition to a low-carbon economy and will contribute to several positive health outcomes. We support the document’s emphasis on recreational cycling and cycling tourism as we believe our area could greatly benefit by building on related opportunities. At the same time, we recognize the potential of cycling as a means of travel for those who choose not to drive or cannot drive because of age, ability or income. As such we support a broad range of cycling activity, and feel cycling for utilitarian purposes should also be promoted and encouraged. In rural, more sparsely populated areas like the District of Parry Sound, where public transportation is not available, cycling is a more affordable transportation option for many. With the goal of improving conditions for active travel between local communities, PSAAT has identified priority routes for improved cycling infrastructure, specifically, paved shoulders on Highway 559 from Killbear Park to Nobel Road, Highway 124 from Parry Sound to McKellar, Nobel Road from Lakeforest Drive to Highway 124 and Rosepoint Road. As currently drafted, it appears that Highway 124 from the Town of Parry Sound to Highway 520 has not been identified as part of the provincial cycling network. We have identified provincially owned Highway 124 as a primary cycling route in our area and feel strongly it must be included as part of the network. By leveraging and supporting local cycling needs, the provincial network will more effectively promote cycling for tourism, recreation and utilitarian purposes and enhance active travel across municipal boundaries. We appreciate the opportunity to provide input and the province’s commitment to improving the safety of current cyclists, increasing the number of future cyclists, and ultimately moving Ontario toward a cleaner, more economical transportation system. PSAAT is a grassroots group of individuals and organizations. We collaborate with local municipalities and organizations to foster an active transportation culture and improve conditions for walking and cycling.
