Sailboats have been using…

Commentaire

Sailboats have been using our waterways and stopping to spend the night since before confederation. Once they became available, powerboat cruisers soon did the same. The one thing all travelers need is a safe, protected bay or harbour to spend the night away from strong winds and waves. An unprotected, exposed shore is not a safe place to anchor. Most protected bays and coves are a magnet for people who wish to build a summer home and have a safe place for their families to enjoy the water. These are the same protected areas that traveling boaters need to be safe. Any vacant land in the Bay of Quinte, Thousand Islands and around Prince Edward County is mostly on exposed, unprotected shores and therefore unsafe for boats to anchor. So, it doesn't matter in those places how close you can get to shore, you will still not be safe. The proposed 300 meter limit will put travelers too far from the protected waters of a developed bay or cove thus exposing them to danger. It will also not allow any anchoring out in many places in the Thousand Islands due to one or the other shore being too close in the narrower passageways. Perhaps the definition of the various vessel types should be amended to allow normal sailing and power cruisers to continue to anchor 100 meters from shore while floating residences cannot.
