If passed, Bill 5 would exempt from environmental assessment requirements the Eagle’s Nest Mine, which is located in the Ring of Fire. There is no credible justification for this. Environmental Assessment must be completed and approved to protect the immense environmental and socio-cultural value of the James Bay lowlands for the benefit of all Ontarians.

It is totally unacceptable that we are eroding the core functions of an environmental assessment (which has already been weakened in the last 'crisis' (Covid)), by removing requirements to review the alleged need for and alternatives to a project.

We must avoid an environmental disaster similar to that is being experienced in the oilsands in Alberta. We must for the health and wellbeing of all Ontarians and Canadians, take the time to thoroughly assess the impacts and implications of all Projects in the Ring of Fire, and proceed with approvals only when the Regional Assessment for the Ring of Fire is completed. We will never be able to get this chance again. If this must be done in the interest of greed, then lets do it with a full understanding of its environmental and socio-cultural costs to Indigenous groups and to all Ontarians.
