I believe it is very important that we do everything possible to protect the nesting habitat of the Ontario Piping Plovers. The Piping Plovers disappeared from Ontario in 1988. A very few returned in 2007. We have had seven nesting pairs in Ontario this year. Since their return a team of volunteers, Parks personnel and Birds Canada have been working to monitor and protect the nesting site of the Piping Plovers at Wasaga Beach. The population is endangered and this years (2025) we had only two nesting pairs at Wasaga Beach. It is critical that every effort is made to protect the habitat at Wasaga Beach and along the shoreline of Georgian Bay so that we can restore a healthy nesting population of Piping Plovers and other shore birds.
