I am very concerned about Bill 5 that has enabled the town of Wasaga Beach to buy the beach area where our fragile population of Piping Plovers nest. There are only about 7 nesting pairs in Ontario. There are 20 nesting pairs of Piping Plovers in the whole Great Lake region. Thus, the majority of Piping Plovers are in the US where protections for them are well established. Ontario is trying very hard to protect our fragile population. These little birds are a delight to birders and tourist alike. They are adorable to watch. Historically there was a robust population of Piping Plovers in Ontario but environmental threats have driven them to almost extinction in Ontario. Wasaga Beach is one area where two pairs of Piping Plovers have nested recently. It would be tragic to lose their habitat at Wasaga Beach to essentially "tinsel town". This is an important moment to marshal every form of support possible to protect this very special habitat of Wasaga Beach for the nesting Piping Plovers. This habitat is vital to the preservation of Piping Plovers in Ontario and a source of pride to Ontario and Canada!
