I'm a biologist and visitor of Wasaga Beach. I'm deeply concerned about the proposed transfer of a portion of Wasaga Beach's shoreline to the municipality. This area includes critical Piping Plover nesting habitat, which has been monitored since these birds reestablished a population in 2008. Wasaga Beach is a uniquely important location for Piping Plovers: it is the source of over half of all Piping Plovers in Ontario, and its maintenance is key to their continued existence. This transfer proposes giving the key habitat to development, including marinas and condos (https://issuu.com/beachbooster/docs/beach_booster_228_-_wasaga_beach_-_… page 10). The township has not been involved in any of the previous conservation efforts , and plovers have previously been extirpated from Sauble Beach due to similar municipal activities (https://thenarwhal.ca/sauble-beach-piping-plovers-ruling/), so I am especially concerned about this motion.
Parks will continue with their monitoring and conservation efforts for as long as the area is under their jurisdiction, so I urge the province to keep this as the case. Please allows Parks to retain the section of Plover habitat from Spruce Street to the river.
