I think the decision to transfer Nancy Island from the government to the town of Wasaga Beach is a shortsighted push for profit that completely neglects the environment in Ontario. Wasaga Beach Provincial Park is already a popular destination for tourism and there is no need to develop it further. People come for the nature, not for tourist traps or other businesses they can find elsewhere. The ecology of the park is unique to itself, and building on it risks destroying fragile environments that support endangered species like the piping plover. The increased human traffic and change in environment will also impact the behaviours of animals and plants elsewhere in the park. When the park stops being unique, people will stop going out of their way to visit. I think the number of visitors will actually decrease if Nancy Island becomes developed. If this proposition goes through, it will trigger the transformation of this important and increasingly rare slice of nature into a generic tourist spot that will be soon forgotten.
