I am writing to express deep concern regarding the proposal to sell off a portion of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park for development.
Wasaga Beach Provincial Park is not just a summer recreation destination—it is a vital piece of Ontario’s natural heritage. Critically, it provides one of the last remaining nesting grounds for the endangered Piping Plover in Ontario. This rare shorebird has experienced a fragile recovery since 2007, a comeback made possible only by dedicated stewardship, habitat protection, and public awareness.
Selling off any part of this park, especially land identified as critical nesting habitat, puts the Piping Plover’s survival at serious risk. The irreversible loss of these sandy beaches and dunes would not just threaten a species on the brink, but would also undo years of conservation success achieved through public investment and community effort.
Protecting Wasaga Beach Provincial Park is a responsibility we all share—both for current visitors and for future generations. I urge the government to reconsider this proposal and prioritize long-term environmental protection over short-term development interests.
