I often go to Wasaga Beach over the summer to enjoy the nice weather but also to see lots of wildlife. Whenever I think of Wasaga I often think of the Piping Plovers nesting grounds. My family and I enjoy trying to spot their nests or talking with the volunteers that run the telescope that helps you spot them. I’m extremely worried how removing vital parts of the beach - especially areas near their nesting grounds that are key parts of the ecosystem - will impact this already endangered species. Near Beach 1 is also where there is a beach that can support wildlife. Most parts of the beach hold no ecological value compared to parts with actual vegetation and protected nesting areas do. That areas has an impact on so many species and human enjoyment. Wasaga tends to already be crowded enough at the beaches let alone when you remove tons of beach to be deemed “unusable” for wildlife and those looking to enjoy the beach. I can appreciate the need to improve tourist areas for the benefit of the city but I believe those improvements should be made away from the provincial parks. As a tourist myself, if these new beach changes get implemented I will likely stop making the trips up to Wasaga beach and find another area that supports the wildlife I enjoy seeing when on vacation.
