I am very concerned about the effects the proposed amendments will have on Piping Plover habitat at Wasaga Beach. Tremendous amounts of time, effort, funds and expertise have gone into making Wasaga Beach the most productive and valuable nesting habitat in the province, and one of few accessible and reliable sites for visitors to see Piping Plovers in Ontario. If the amendments go through, this area will lose all protections, and will lose the expertise of Parks staff in monitoring and stewardship of this area for Piping Plovers. If the proposed amendments go through, it is absolutely essential that the province of Ontario ensures that a science-based plan is in place for continued monitoring and protection of Piping Plovers and their nesting habitat at Wasaga Beach by organizations that have been doing this work for years (Provincial Parks, Birds Canada). Resources and funding for this work must be provided by the province, and there must be a commitment to restricting mechanical raking to avoid habitat destruction, prohibiting dune alteration, and protecting nests with fenced buffer zones and predator mitigations.
