My son (14yrs old) has become an avid birder over the last year, and through him, I have also learned more and more about our Ontario birds.
The piping plover is on his "life-list" but we are concerned he may never get the chance to see it because they are endangered and their habitat is threatened.
We feel the beaches at Wasaga need to remain part of the Provincial park so that they can continued to be managed in a way that allows people access to the beach, but also protects the piping plover habitat.
We are lucky to have this area that is slowly giving the Piping Plover a chance at recovery, but we need to protect it.
The recent changes passed by the Ontario government are very concerning and do not reflect the environmental standards Ontarians have supported for years. It leaves these vulnerable species and their critical habitat open for destruction and once it is gone, there will be no fixing it, it will be too late for too many species, and that is a loss we cannot afford.
Please reconsider this plan to change the boundaries of the park, and turning over this critical area to the town of Wasaga.
We are seeing the success of the Piping Plover nests and fledglings because they are being protected. We need the experts in conservation to continue to manage these areas to continue to have that success.
Please protect these areas so that my son has a chance to see these wonderful birds in their natural habitat, raising their young and thriving, and not just as photos of another species lost to Ontario forever.
