I am writing to express my strong opposition to this proposal as it would negatively impact critical habitat for the piping plover (Charadrius melodus). As a federally threatened species under the Endangered Species Act, the piping plover depends on undisturbed coastal habitats, particularly sandy beaches and dunes, for nesting and survival. Any action that compromises these areas puts the species at further risk and undermines decades of conservation efforts.
The piping plover is already facing numerous threats, including habitat loss, human disturbance, and climate-related impacts, and increased storm frequency. Development or recreational use in these sensitive areas would further fragment habitat, disrupt breeding behaviors, and reduce nesting success. Given their small population size and limited breeding range, even small disturbances can have outsized effects.
Protecting piping plover habitat is not only a legal and ecological responsibility but also an ethical one. These birds are part of a delicate coastal ecosystem that supports a wide range of biodiversity.
Instead of moving forward with a proposal that endangers this critical habitat, I urge you to prioritize conservation and seek alternatives that protect both wildlife and the long-term health of these ecosystems. There is a growing public awareness of the need to balance human activity with environmental stewardship, and protecting piping plovers aligns with this vision.
Thank you for considering this important issue. I hope you will take the necessary steps to reject any plan that would jeopardize the survival of the piping plover and instead support actions that preserve our shared natural heritage.
