Although I believe that there is some exaggerated misinformation circulating about the scope of this land transfer, I do have two major concerns and would prefer seeing the Province continue (and take back) the stewardship of the entire beach.
(1) It is not sufficient to get verbal assurances from mayor Smith about future access and protection of the beach; this needs to be legally enshrined, or if it already is, then this should be much better communicated.
(2) Living in the Allenwood Beach area myself, I have witnessed a significant shift in maintenance towards parking enforcement, with a decline in all other beach maintenance since the town took over this spring.
For example, the beach is now being raked but it has not once been manually cleaned, as the Park used to do on a weekly basis. The effect is that tons of garbage is being raked under.
Similarly, the ropes protecting the dunes were ripped for weeks, got repaired this week, but are broken again; visitors constantly trample across the dunes, youth play ball games on the dunes, etc. There is no signage about dune protection and access paths. With the dry weather, fine sand continues to get blown off the beach for lack of dune height or fencing.
Dogs are now roaming freely on the beach at all times of day, which I find unacceptable. I request a strict no-dogs policy with signage and enforcement.
Although I am sure some of this issues will be resolved easily, I believe they demonstrate the town’s priorities, which are too narrow and show too little foresight. The province has better resources and expertise to be in charge, hopefully in better collaboration with the town than in the past.
