I support the transfer of Nancy Island and hope that it will help ensure Nancy Island’s unique history—including its connection to the War of 1812 and the HMS Nancy—is preserved and presented to future generations in a way that engages the public, supports local tourism, and fosters pride in Ontario’s heritage.
I encourage the government to proceed with this transfer to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport (MTCS) to secure the long-term sustainability and cultural enrichment of Nancy Island.
I also ask that the government proceed with extreme caution regarding the transfer of Beach 1. While I support the concept in principle, I strongly encourage measures to ensure the protection of the dunes and the natural birding habitat, particularly for the Piping Plover and other species at risk. The area that I believe should remain protected is from Spruce Street to the mouth of the Nottawasaga River.
I have seen successful implementation of “Natural Bird or Wildlife Sanctuaries” in other growing municipalities within Canada and United States the act as large tourist attractions, and I believe that a designated section of land at Beach 1 should be deemed permanently protected to safeguard these sensitive habitats.
