I'm an avid long-standing cycle-tourist and commuter cyclist, riding for over 60 years.
The single-most major impediment for safe cycling on provincial roads are rumble strips, which are invariably installed with no apparent consideration for the cyclist. If engineers feel that a rumble strip is necessary, then it should be installed either ON THE WHITE SHOULDER LINE , or to the LEFT of that line, maximizing the value of (often) a limited shoulder.
I cannot understand why MTO treats cycling as a municipal responsibility. The bicycle IS A VEHICLE and not only used for recreation, but for TRANSPORTATION, but the MTO appears to consider cycling as purely a recreational function. Currently, in Severn, there is no infrastructure to allow the (non-experienced, occasional) cyclist to ride from their residence to either school, the mall, or office. Over 1,000 houses are being built in Severn, with no provision for residents to cycle into the city.
The MTO should educate the motorist on the newly-enacted 3'-1 metre overtaking law. "Share the Road" signs are ineffective - they are TOO SUBJECTIVE. 3'-1 metre is specific, and enforceable.
