I strongly oppose Bill 60 for several critical reasons that directly affect the safety and well-being of cyclists, especially parents like myself who bike in Toronto with a toddler. First and foremost, this bill strips cities of their local authority and decision-making power, disregarding evidence-based projects and the voices of community residents who are advocating for safer streets.

The assertion that this bill will reduce traffic congestion is misleading. In fact, various government experts have consistently stated that bike lanes are not a cause of gridlock. Instead, they help promote alternative modes of transportation, ultimately alleviating congestion. By undermining this, the bill is likely to worsen traffic conditions, not improve them.

Moreover, removing protected bike lanes will make our roads considerably more dangerous. These lanes are crucial for protecting cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers alike, preventing serious injuries and fatalities. As a parent, the safety of my child while biking is a constant source of anxiety, especially when many drivers show little respect for cyclists on the road.

The bill also jeopardizes other essential uses of road space that our communities rely on, such as transit priority, safe crossings, patios, curbside access, and school streets. By prioritizing car-dependent designs, Bill 60 undermines our climate goals and public health initiatives, locking cities into outdated transportation models that do not serve the best interests of our community.

In conclusion, I urge lawmakers to reconsider this bill and focus on fostering safer, more inclusive roads that prioritize all users, especially families. Thank you for considering the impact this bill will have on our community and the safety of those who bike.
