This Bill unfairly targets bicycle lanes and specifically calls them out in a manner that undermines them. This is not a forward thinking Bill and will not meet the aim of the Bill to fight delays and build faster. Cycling has been proven to get to places much faster than a vehicle, especially within cores where people live, work and play.
The Bill further strips local municipalities of their own decision-making authority. This is an example of micromanagement on the part of the Province. This is not good leadership.
It will further worsen traffic congestion, not reduce it. The Province's own experts have consistently said that bike lanes are not a cause of gridlock. It is time for the Province to consider their experts' advice in policy-writing.
Protected bike lanes prevent serious injuries and deaths for all people, whether they bike, walk, or drive. It provides clarity to all.
Most importantly, it undermines municipal, provincial, national and international climate goals by favouring and prioritizing a mode of transportation that is not as sustainable as others, such as public transit and cycling.
Furthermore, cycling addresses our affordability crisis. Cycling is more affordable then a car as there is no need to pay for gas, insurance, parking etc. and therefore actively contributes to the fight for affordability in Ontario.
