To the Environmental Registry of Ontario,
I am writing to express my strong opposition to the provisions within Bill 60, the Fighting Delays, Building Faster Act, that would prohibit municipalities from reducing motor vehicle lanes to build new bike lanes.
As an active user of cycling infrastructure, I can attest to the profound and immediate impact that dedicated bike lanes have on personal and community safety. For my family of 5 and me, cycling is a viable, healthy, and sustainable mode of transportation, but it is truly accessible only when separated, protected infrastructure is in place.
The potential for Bill 60 to block planned, evidence-based cycling projects, such as those proposed for Parkside Drive, Dupont Street, and the Danforth Avenue extension, is hugely concerning. This legislation directly undermines local governments' efforts to build safer streets. My priority, and the priority of countless others, is safety—not just for cyclists, but for pedestrians and the entire community.
A one-size-fits-all, car-centric approach should not dictate the design of safe, reliable transportation infrastructure. I urge the provincial government to remove the prohibitive clauses regarding lane reallocation from Bill 60 and allow municipalities to continue making decisions that prioritize the health, safety, and well-being of their residents.
