Decades of studies and data have proven, incontrovertibly, that, in dense urban environments, induced demand ensures that increasing lanes and even building new roads will not address traffic issues - there are simply too many potential drivers in a city. Less space intensive forms of transportation, such as cycling and mass transit are the only ways to reduce traffic congestion that are supported by quantitative data and evidence. Additionally, cycling and mass transit are less energy intensive and support environmental health, which is becoming increasingly important in order to reverse climate change, the extreme weather events that it causes, and the costs born by Ontarians to mitigate the damage of these events. Finally, cycling, as a form of exercise, has proven benefits for the physical and mental health of Ontarians. For all the above reasons, I oppose the stipulations in Bill 60 that would obstruct the construction of much-needed bike lanes.
