I do not support the proposed consolidation of conservation authorities in Ontario. I think this is a short sighted proposal that if implemented will result in less responsive service and support to the people and regions of Ontario and greater risk under a changing climate. For example, I have lived and worked in the proposed Lake Erie Region Conservation Authority for my whole life. I really don't see how lumping such a large and varied area ( in terms of soil, weather, agricultural and industrial base and population density etc) could possibly be more efficient and also serve the full role of a conservation authority. Some of the strength of the current arrangement of Conservation Authorities comes from their watershed structure. Each Authority has its strengths and because of the local nature is focussed on the needs and strengths of each area within their watersheds. They are better situated to support change whether urban or rural.. They are better suited to be responsive and proactive in the case of climate change issues like adverse weather/flooding/water management.
In some areas there has been some very adversarial relationships develop between the agricultural community and the local Conservation Authority due to zoning issues and communication challenges. This proposal would not improve the communication issues and potentially result in areas feeling even more ignored.
