I am pleased that the moratorium has been extended; I would like to see it become permanent. I live in a growing city, Guelph, that is dependent on groundwater for our drinking water. Population growth, drought conditions such as those experienced in parts of Ontario in 2016, and, above all, climate change will affect the amount of water available to us in the near and far future. Let us allot the water we have to our taps, and not to large corporations that seek to put it into yet more wasteful plastic.
Therefore, I would also like to see a phase out of existing water-taking permits, certainly for water-bottling purposes. If such action were taken, the Middlebook well near Elora, now owned by Nestle, might be available to the Township of Centre Wellington to secure a supply of drinking water for its population.
Given recent statements by the UN on climate change, I think it necessary that governments turn their attention to actions that can lessen its effects. Decreasing the amount of plastic being produced and dumped and ensuring a continued supply of drinking water to Ontario's peoples are two such actions that need to be taken.
Thank you.
