I support extending the moratorium for another year to allow more time to complete various studies underway to assess the quantity of groundwater fit to drink for Ontarians.
We are experiencing increasing drought and severe weather conditions with associated runoff that are reducing the amount of water penetrating our groundwater aquifers. We need to advance our understanding of our provincial water resources, incorporating the impact of climate change and increased population growth (Places to Grow) on our long-term water sustainability (considering multiple generations’ needs rather than just our current generation).
Our focus should include evaluating existing rules and policies governing water taking by high capacity wells, especially those within close proximity to large or developing urban areas.
We are witnessing signs around the world of reducing water supply and we should not consider ourselves immune to their challenges.
I applaud our government for their proactive approach to ensure the health and integrity of our groundwater supply.
