I deeply and strongly oppose Bill 60.
As a cyclist, driver, and pedestrian who lives adjacent to Parkside Drive in Toronto, I'm appalled at this bill's, and the government's, disregard for the safety of Ontarians.
Taking power out of the hands of municipalities to design and plan their own roadways is an affront each city and town's autonomy. The city of Toronto in no way voted to have this power taken from our duly elected municipal officials.
Cyclist, pedestrian, and driver safety should be paramount when designing and updating roadways. This bill will not reduce congestion in any meaningful way, but it will endanger the lives of thousands, especially since this government has banned the use of automated speed enforcement cameras, which had been proven to slow down cars and prevent accidents.
Now, a roadway that has been made LESS SAFE by this government will be even MORE DANGEROUS for cyclists and pedestrians. The city has had a plan for a safety redesign of the street that included cycle tracks. The Ontario government's choice to table this legislation will cause preventable deaths.
This is not hyperbole or overly dramatic rhetoric. This bill will cost lives and should not exist.
