I am writing to say that as a resident of Ontario, I don't support Bill 60. It ignores the evidence which shows that bike lanes make the streets safer for everyone.
The province should not play politics with our lives and go against what the local communities in each municipality want and what they elected their councillors and mayor to protect. Bill 60 would prohibit any municipality in Ontario from reducing motor vehicle lanes to build new bike lanes, which is anti-democratic.
We need more bike lanes and not less. Planned cycling projects like Parkside Drive, Dupont Street, and the Danforth Avenue extension won't be possible if Bill 60 becomes law.
As a survivor of a car accident that crushed my bike on Ossington, I rely on bike lanes to get around safely.
Thousands of people ride in the bike lanes of Toronto and deserve safety, and many thousands more would ride if they could do so safely.
Protected bike lanes make streets safer for everyone (Toronto City Staff found a 44% reduction in collisions for ALL road users after the Bloor pilot was installed).
Please pass laws based on evidence and public safety and not lobby groups for car drivers or friends of the Ontario government. The people of Toronto - and many other municipalities - say no to these plans, which put us at risk and don't promote good sense to reduce traffic, congestion and pollution from cars.
Bikes don't pollute, cars do. Bikes don't kill people, drivers in cars do.
