I am writing in opposition to the proposed amalgamation of multiple conservation authorities in Ontario. Although I understand the need for financial responsibility in all areas of government, changes should not be made which hinder the work of the affected departments. I live in Thunder Bay so am particularly concerned about the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority becoming part of the Huron-Superior Conservation Authority when Lakehead is located a very far distance from the many other authorities with which it would combine. At this time, when we are at a critical juncture for the earth with regard to climate change, we need the expertise of each local area to understand what it most important for current concerns with regard to the environment in our area.
The aim of the amalgamation is to reduce overlap, but there is not overlap in this case. LRCA should not be combined with authorities which do not have watershed or municipal connections, as it does. It is unique in its location and programs and needs to maintain its “local, independent, municipally governed, watershed-based conservation authorities.”
Thank you for your consideration in this very important matter!
