The Conservation Authorities are experts on their LOCAL watershed. The watersheds provide, amongst many other things, safety zones for water destined to be consumed -- whether through ground or surface water supply. It is inconceivable that the government would compromise the safety of the clean water supply of this province, not only for the short term but also for the longer term. The aquifer regeneration zones as well as the water source areas are sacrosanct for the current time and the future. It is unbelievable that the government would compromise the ability of the conservation areas because of cost savings.
Additionally, ecosystem science is complex and much of it is unknown. The government should be increasing conservation authority to guard against unintentional degradation of our environment. We (scientists) know so little about all the moving parts that to arbitrarily limit the safety of any of the 'parts' is to impair the whole from complete functionality. We currently have little knowledge about the depth of the interplay of ALL the components of an ecosystem.
Without a healthy environment we have NO ECONOMY.
