I am firmly opposed to this proposal and would urge the province to reinstate the former Endangered Species Act. There is simply no sufficient justification to ever exempt projects from thorough, evidence-based review and permitted process, or to risk degradation of critical habitat.

It makes no ecological sense to reduce the definition of “habitat” to mere immediate dwellings like dens, nesting sites or critical root zones. Species need large areas not just to sleep but to carry out their life processes like foraging, hunting and mating.

Ontario’s proposed regulations and guidelines under the new Species Conservation Act, 2025 would further weaken the protection of species at risk and their habitats, and remove the public’s right to have a say in decisions that will have serious ecological impacts.

The black ash tree is an extreme hindrance to any development near woodlands due to its abundance.
A great way to speed up development would be to remove this tree from endangered protection or allow permits to proceed with black ash removal.
