I am vehemently opposed to this given the health risks to our community. These risks are unacceptable. The Algoma district had an overall cancer incidence of tel:608/100000 in 2020 (the most current data from Cancercare Ontario); provincial average is tel:413/100000. Read more

The steel plant should have to comply with emissions even though they are building the arc furnace it’s a disgrace what they are emitting into our environment. When you live in the area most days you can’t sit outside. I have never seen this much pollution in my 47 years of living in the area. Read more

Algoma Steel emits so much pollution. I live in a neighbourhood close by. There is black soot on my windows. The exterior of my car has a persistent white dust. It is always there. Wash the car, it is back with 2 hours. You can see it in the air. White fluffy flakes. Read more

I provide these comments to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) in response to Algoma Steel’s request for an Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) for emissions at its iron and steel manufacturing plant in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. Read more

We live across the river and downwind from the Algoma Steel Plant in Sault Ste Marie, MI. For decades we have been exposed to the toxins coming out of this plant. My wife is a cancer survivor, and we feel that this plant could have contributed to it. Read more

The current ECA provides no information on how the ongoing emissions from the coke oven stacks will meet the regulatory limits. A review of the Environmental Incidents on the company website shows longstanding exceedences at each of the oven stacks. Read more

We live 45 kms north of the Algoma Steel Plant. Even here we can smell the steel making process if the winds are from that direction. Polluting the air, soil and water is no longer an option and the proposal will only increase the danger of irreversible climate and ecosystem damage. Read more

Algoma Steel should not receive any special considerations regarding environmental factors. As an individual who has worked in the Coke Oven in the past I can attest to the blatant disregard to emissions and the controls that should be in place to prevent unnecessary harm to the community. No provincial emission standards should be broken by any company. The province should never grant exceptions to their own environmental standards. I vote no to granting exceptions to exceeding emission standards for Ontario. Algoma steel is still years away from electric arc furnaces. Read more

How will pollution be stopped at the source? How will air and water be protected? There is nothing in the report from Algoma Steel that gives confidence that this will be done. It's great that the electric arc is being built, but there are many concerns that pollution will continue. Why???? Read more
