Bypassing the requirements to do an archeological assessment would be absolutely horrendous. Bypassing this step could mean destroying Indigenous burials or artifacts, as well as historic artifacts. Read more

I am in favour of boosting our economy, but not at the expense of losing our past. The finds that you would be destroying and not studying are irreplaceable, along with the information that could be learned from them. Read more

As a resident of Ontario that works in the archaeological resource management industry, I am deeply concerned about the proposed changes to the Ontario Heritage Act (OHA), outlined in Bill 5, Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025. Read more

Risks of Bill 005 to Archaeological Findings - Weaker Checks: The bill lowers oversight. By streamlining approvals, it reduces the time and scrutiny typically used to detect archaeological value early on. That means projects could break ground before anyone realizes what's being lost. Read more

This is a very shortsighted proposal. It destroys our past for the profit of a few. Once these sites are gone they are gone forever. Other countries have a professional approach to this and if done right and planned for does NOT severely impact timelines or cost. Read more

Bill 5 appears to infringe on the rights of First Nations and Indigenous communities. Examples of where a property "might" not be considered for an exemption "could" include former Indian Residential School sites, burials and significant archaeological sites. Read more

The concept of ignoring the possibility of unearthing archeological findings will do untold damage to the future of our country. And I do say untold because we will be ignorant or our own history and it will be our own fault. Read more

While I think some elements of this bill have merit, none of them can be implemented properly. This is asking an existing group of organizations in the ministry and agencies, who are already critically underfunded and understaffed, to take on exponentially more work at the whim of a Minister. The changes that are trying to be put forth for bill 5 are extremely concerning. This bill is going to harm Indigenous archaeology and history, as well as endangered species. This bill will allow developers to be exempt from regulations which is absolutely NOT okay. Read more

Put an end to bill 7, bill 5 should remain intact! Unceded territory is to remain in favour of the land, the rights of the people, especially the indigenous peoples of Canada! Changing law behind doors in favour of greed is absolutely disgusting and the people won’t stand in agreement!

Allowing development on lands that have not been archaeologically assessed is ethically wrong. Firstly, it disregards indigenous communities who connect to archaeological finds as a way of connecting to their history and culture, which the government has tried repeatedly to diminish. Read more

I strongly oppose this proposal to allow the Ontario government greater powers to utilize protected archeological sites for the governments own projects. These protections are very important for preserving the history of our province. Read more

I am against Bill 5. The Government is trying to ram through a bill of power grab and lawlessness. This Government has a track record of recalcitrance and obfuscation, which is only made ever more evident by the short consultation period. Read more
